Why the EZ Flash Photography Workshop?
There are some who see camera flash almost as an anathema. In fact, you’ve most likely heard photographers advertising as ‘natural light only.’ Well, because you can’t control natural light, anyone who depends on it is limiting themselves as far as what they can do. The real tragedy of that mindset is, however, greater than just a restriction of when and where shots can be taken. Flash is an art form in and of itself; one which needs to be understood in order to be appreciated. There are so many things that you can do with flash, and you’re seriously cheating yourself if you don’t learn. The EZ Flash Photography Workshop is a three week course which I would highly recommend to anyone as a highly cost effective way to learn lighting.
What’s in it?
The workshop starts with a basic equipment walkthrough. After that, you’ll of course start your training as to how to use it, starting with flash bounce. As the name of the technique implies, you’ll learn to deflect light. The advantages of which would include controlling the direction of light and shadows, and diffusing (softening) flash.
The next lesson goes into the subject of diffusion itself.
Several following lessons go into studio light setup. You learn about different options with a single light, and then you learn about a two-light setup.
The lesson after that is dedicated learning low key. In other words, you learn how to have the subject well lit, while the environment is completely blacked out.
Next up are gels, which are used to add color. By learning to use them properly, you can really spice up the background in a portrait session!
They’ll take you into the high key setup after that. There are two final lessons which involve exposure without flash, and one final advanced setup.
There are several things that I really like about this workshop. I’ve already mentioned that it’s cost effective. For a workshop, it really is priced well. Another thing that is really good about it is that you don’t lose access to the lessons once you’ve finished the course. If there’s something you want to review after the fact, you can. And of course, you learn a lot of great ways to use light to boost the impact of your photos.
Of course, this is a long distance learning course. There isn’t the same level of interactivity as there is in a live scenario. I still feel that this is a quality workshop, however.
The bottom line:
I’ve always been a big proponent of using external flash units. You get power and versatility, and furthermore, you get consistency and a wider range of exposure options. But of course, it will only work for you if you know how to use it. The EZ Flash Photography Workshop will show you how to get solid, professional looking results very quickly, with the option to go back and review the classes AFTER completing them.
